AT first glance, anyone would be forgiven for thinking that they had entered the 1940s when they stepped inside the grounds of the Old Mill, Aldermaston on Saturday.

In fact, it was the annual Aldermaston and Wasing Show, which saw more than 1,000 people getting into the ’40s spirit – which was this year’s theme.

Old favourites such as the duck derby, egg throwing competition and produce show were accompanied by The Sainsbury Singers and comical trio All Things Forties to keep the crowds entertained.

Historic planes from Brimpton Airfield also flew over the grounds.

Several competitions were run, with Daisy Ladley, aged eight, winning ‘best-dressed duck’ and Shauna Rosario, aged eight, winning ‘cleverest dog’ with her pup, Blaze, to name a few.

Show secretary Jennifer Lacon said that it had been a “brilliant” day and revealed that the 450-car parking area was overflowing, with a shuttle service to and from the village also being run.

“We had to let people out before we could let people in,” she said, adding that the effort from spectators and staff alike was something to be praised.

“Everyone went above and beyond what I anticipated them to do.

“Aldermaston certainly can be proud.”

The total amount raised from the day is still being calculated and all profits will go towards the redecoration of Aldermaston St Mary’s Church.
